CAVALLINO-TREPORTI: A PENINSULA SUSPENDED BETWEEN THE SEA AND THE VENICE LAGOON
A strip of land that stretches between two bodies of water: on one side the Adriatic Sea, with its long beach of golden sand and green pine forest and, on the other, the lagoon with its unspoilt landscapes, alternating canals and sandbanks, with the unmistakeable outline of Venice as a backdrop. Over 15 km of coastline in Cavallino-Treporti contains a natural environment of unparalleled beauty, embraced by the warm rays of the sun, which every morning rises above the waters of the sea and sinks into those of the Lagoon at sunset. The unique nature of the Cavallino-Treporti landscape is its blend of two extremely different eco-systems: the sea and the lagoon. The result is a series of overlapping, diverse environments: the sandbanks of the lagoon, the fish farms that breed eels, bass and bream, but also the beach, the pine forest and the kitchen gardens. An environment in which the work of man has also harmonised with the surrounding landscape, while preserving the wealth of local flora and fauna. There is also room for relics of the past, with a system of architecture and military fortifications that once served to defend Venice, first during the Austrian domination and then during the two world wars.
The Cavallino-Treporti area is divided into 12 districts: Lio Grando, Ca' Ballarin, Ca' Pasquali, Ca' Savio, Ca' di Valle, Ca' Vio, Cavallino, Lio Piccolo, Mesole, Punta Sabbioni, Saccagnana and Treporti. The peninsula is crossed by various waterways. The River Sile, which runs through the old basin of the River Piave, separates it from nearby Jesolo. The length of the territory is crossed by the Pordelio Canal, which branches out towards the West into the Portosecco and Saccagnana canals and into the Casson canal to the East. If you follow the unpaved paths that run alongside the banks of these waterways (perhaps by bike), you can stop in one of the many hamlets full of centuries worth of history and then explore the lagoon landscape, where you can have breathtaking encounters with seagulls, herons and cormorants.
