THE PALIO REMIERO: A CENTURIES-OLD HISTORY
A month full of initiatives and festivals all along the coastline culminates in the eagerly awaited rowing contest between the 12 contrade (local districts). From late May to late June, Cavallino-Treporti is filled with the colours of the Palio Remiero, an event that combines a love of sport and the open air with the tradition of Venetian rowing, the unique rowing style that developed on the Venice Lagoon. A stay in Cavallino - Treporti during the Palio Remiero means deeply immersing yourself in popular local folklore. The event commemorates the thousand-year-old link between this area and the water and recalls the tireless work of farmers on the coastline who, over half a century ago, crossed the lagoon on board their vessels to reach the vegetable market in the Venice Rialto.
During the period in which the Palio Remiero, promoted by the association of the same name, takes place, all the towns organise celebrations and events in which you can sample typical local products and enjoy yourself in the company of others. But everyone awaits the day of the final rowing context, when the twelve local contrade compete. The day opens with a choreographic historic procession of boats down the Pordelio canal, recalling the origins of the communities that date back to the Roman Age and that of the Doges of Venice. The key moment is the rowing contest, with the representatives from various contrade who compete aboard typical vessels of the Venice Lagoon: from mascarete to 6-oared caorline and the famous gondolas. The contrada that wins the main rowing contest, on caorline, will be awarded the Palio d’Arte, the standard created specially for the occasion every year by a different artist.
